I have two sons with spectrum autism disorder. They have multiple problems, but are considered to be high functioning. Both boys suffer social deficits and most of the time tend to be oblivious to what other children are doing. My oldest son, now 12, is entering an age where he is becoming more aware of what peers think and act towards him. He sometimes comes home from school and quietly tells me what some classmate said about him, which is never very nice. My child is very smart and understands he has autism and will say " this boy just doesn't understand me because I have autism" What can I say to this? How do other parents deal with social conflicts when a high functioning child reaches the more sensitive years? What can I expect as he gets older? Or do I care more about it than he does?
